This Site Looks Lame…

Their words, not mine.  According to the scroll at the bottom of the page, “This site may look lame but it works” – I agree with the first part, but I have to disagree with the second part.  Plus, I’m not sure why you would want to call out your website’s “lame” design to visitors.  What do you think?

I have to imagine there are international laws that govern the buying/selling/transport of animals, like geckos, from country to country, but hey, I suppose I’ve seen weirder affiliate websites.

If it Ain’t Broke…

Sometimes change is good.  Sometimes innovative people develop new ways of doing things that really are better.  But in many cases, longstanding techniques have earned their longevity because they work.

An example of this is website navigation.  Most websites put their navigation along the top of the page or down the side – usually the left side for e-commerce websites, and often the right side for blogs.  While these choices may have been arbitrary at the beginning, they have now become the standard, bolstered by eye-tracking studies that show users scan webpages in an “F” pattern — across the top, down the left and then into the middle of the screen.

So when building your affiliate website, try to stick with what typical users are likely to expect after visiting hundreds if not thousands of other sites that use a top or left navigation.  Otherwise, you end up with a muddled-looking website like this:

I can’t tell if this website was written by an automated text generator or someone who doesn’t speak English very well, but either way, the text is a mess!  Here’s some advice for affiliates of all stripes – please run your text through a spelling and grammar checker before posting it online.
